We lost our power for two days

Published by cwilson26 at 4:33 pm under thoughts Edit This

I was going to continue my post from Sunday about my animals the next day but we lost our power Sunday night and it didn’t come back on until Tuesday night. I didn’t have time to get on here Tuesday and yesterday and I was just really tired for some reason. The power was expected to be out for a whole week but Thank God, it came back on after only 2 days. We were prepared for a week, though. We sent our food from the freezer to the neighbors who had a generator and we bought more flashlights, batteries, candles, and ice. We kept some food here to cook outside with. Tuesday night as we were cooking out and cleaning up the yard, the power came back on. It was around 7pm. I was so happy, I started jumping up and down and screaming, “The lights are on!” I was ecstatic! You know the saying, “You don’t know what you have until it’s gone?” Well that saying is definitely true. I am just glad it is back. What is weird is, this storm wasn’t as bad as the last one. The last storm literally uprooted trees from our yard and the power didn’t go out. However, this time the wind wasn’t that bad and the power went out for two days. Weird!

Anyway, on to the subject about my dogs and cats. We got Fluff next. One morning my husband got up around 7am and looked out the living room window and saw a puppy laying on our bridge. He thought it was our dog Scotty and thought he was hurt. He woke me up and I told him Scotty was in the house. So he went outside and saw a little puppy laying on the bridge. She wasn’t hurt, but seemed like she was resting. My husband brought her in the house immediately and we decided to give her to my mother-n-law. My mother-n-law had her for a couple of months and had to give her back to us because she broke her arm and couldn’t take care of her anymore. That was about 6 years ago and we have had her ever since. She is now six years old and a happy, fat dog. She had 4 litters of puppies before we could get her spayed. Yes, I know, it could have killed her but at the time we couldn’t afford to get any of our pets spayed and neutered and we didn’t know about the Humane Society helping low income families with their pets. After her last litter my husband got a hold of someone at the humane society and she helped pay to get Fluff and one of the pups we kept, spayed. We ended up keeping one pup from the first litter, Freckles. I will talk more about her in a little while. The second litter was 4 big puppies and they all went fast. My mom kept a puppy out of the third litter and almost 3 years later, her and my dad still have her. We finally kept one puppy out of the last litter and almost two years later we still have her. So now Fluff is a happy and fat dog who can never have babies again, Thank God. It is not easy taking care of puppies. I had to take care of all of them until someone took each one and they would wake me up in the middle of the night when mommy didn’t want to feed them. It was worth it though, because I have so many memories of those precious puppies. I am thankful to the Humane Society for helping us get all of our dogs and cats spayed and neutered.

Next is Freckles. Freckles was the puppy out of the first litter we kept. She was my baby girl and lived for three years before she got sick all of a sudden and died. She got sick so fast we didn’t have time tot ake her to the vet. The day we made the appointment for the following day, she died that night. She was such a great dog and I loved her and still miss her every day. She died January of this year. It was so sudden. At first she was eating and drinking water but throwing up and then she wouldn’t eat or drink anything. She lost so much weight, it was like picking up a ragdoll. She couldn’t stand up by herself because she was so weak. Because of her sudden death, we took our dog, Jasper to the vet when he started showing the same signs. After taking the prescribed medications, he is now fine and no longer throwing up or losing weight. The vet said he had hook worm and heart worm. I am just so grateful we were able to take him to the vet but I wish we could have taken Freckles to the vet before she died. We might have been able to save her life. I miss her so much.

Next is Sammy. Sammy is the last puppy we kept out of Fluff’s last litter. She is a big dog and hyper as well. She will turn 2 in March of ‘09. She is a good watch dog and does not like strangers. She is a happy and healthy dog and I love her very much. I love all of my animal children.

Then we have Jake. Jake is a Rottweiler and Chow mixed breed and he is 1 year and 2 months old. We have had him since he was 3 months old. My husband’s brother had him and needed someone to take him because they couldn’t have animals where he and his girlfriend were moving to so we took him and have had him ever since. He is getting bigger and bigger and a very good watch dog. He is a part of the family and my husband has trained him to protect me just like he did with all of the other dogs.

The last dog is Cloe and she is also the youngest! We just got her this month, last week actually. My other brother-n-law gave her to us because my husband said he wanted her. I don’t even know why some people get dogs. My brother-n-law got Cloe for his oldest son who is 4 years old. He let his little boy pull her by the ears and tail. Brother-n-law and his wife also locked poor Cloe in the garage and wouldn’t feed her for days. I know this because my mother-n-law seen them treat Cloe this way and yelled at them for it. She told us and we asked if they wanted to get rid of her. We know they didn’t feed her right because she tries to eat everything in sight now. We have to keep her away from the other dogs and cats when it is feeding time or she will eat her food and theirs too. Poor little puppy. She is only 5 months old and so small. She is a Beagle and was easy to house-train. She now goes to the door when she needs to go out and if either we aren’t in the room, she comes to us to let us know she needs to go outside. Poor puppy just needed some love and attention. I told my husband if his brother gets anymore animals, I will call the Humane Society and get the animals taken off of them. We cannot take in anymore, we have 6 dogs now! I told my husband that we cannot save them all, even though I wish we could. Cloe now has a happy and loveable home and will never have to go through that terrible stuff again. It breaks my heart when people abuse their pets and children.

That is all about my dogs. Now I also have 4 cats but I had 13 at one time. Some were hit by cars and some died from old age. Knuckles the first ended up getting into our car one night while we were sleeping and the next day my husband took the car up to the store for a pack of cigarettes. He did not know she was in the car and when he pulled into the gas station and opened the car door, she jumped out. He tried to catch her but she ran off. That was almost 2 years ago and I haven’t seen her since. I loved that cat and still miss her. I still wonder what happened to her. I can only hope and pray that someone kind and loving took her in and gave her a good home. I cannot and will not think otherwise.

The cats I have left are Leo, Lizzy, Knuckles the second, and Coby. Leo is the oldest and the only male. Three of my cats are outside because they don’t like being inside. My newest kitten, who was rescued by my dad and given to us, comes in and out all day. She stays in at night and sleeps with us. My dad found her at his job wondering around all alone. She is a small kitten and looks like she is only 2 months old. Her name is Coby and I named her after another cat I used to have because she looks almost exactly like her. Someone must have had her in the house because she was litter trained when my dad brought her home. My mom and dad kept her for a couple of days but their dog didn’t like her. So I told them I would take her. The first couple of days were a disaster. The dogs went crazy when I brought her home but after a few days they finally got used to her and now they play with her. I have to watch them though because they like to grab her by the neck and throw her in the air and try to catch her. I think they think she is their own personal chew toy, lol. Every time I catch one of them biting her, I rescue her and bring her inside. She is a good cat though and I am glad my dad brought her home.

Knuckles the second is named after her grandmother, Knuckles the first because she looks exactly like her. Lizzy is a little wild and will only let me pet her while she is eating.

So that is all about my animal children. Thank you for reading my long post! :)

I wouldn’t know what to do with that many animals! Glad your power got back on quicker than expected.
